Taking Down The Warren

They were all in positions, as far as he could tell and he gazed at his manipulator that had been enhanced with the tracking devices.  Calling up the display, which hovered like a hologram over his wrist with an areal view of the warehouse and the surrounding areas, Jack counted dots.  White dots for the werewolves, forty-three of them now.  The ones from around the city had returned this afternoon to sleep away the daylight hours.  Light green for the human operatives.  Deep yellow-gold for the Jacks because of what they were infused with.  Peter, Kate and Liz were a soft blue, mutated humans.  Red and Alisa didn't show up at all because of what they happened to be.

"Role call everyone.  Team Alpha at the rear entrance.  Jack, Gadget, Gwen, all here.  Team Beta?"  They were at the front entrance, the first to go in.  He listened for New York Jack, his wife, and Kate to call out.  Good.  "Team Gamma?"  They were also at the front.  The other Jack from New York, Rose Tyler, Red and Liz Sherman.  Again, he waited for the all clear.  They were damage control, defense.  "Team Delta?"  His other Jack, Peter Petrelli and Renee, up on the roof.  Their job was strictly support, to clean out the top of the warehouse, to back up the Rift team or extract damaged agents.

When the all clear was sounded, he turned back to those in the SUV, running intelligence from the Hubs.  Both Iantos, Jackie and Owen for triage.  Just in case.

"All right folks.  Beta and Gamma, it's your show."

Jack watched him for a moment, a slight tugging on his heart. He really hated to see Peter die, or get hurt. He was young, and Jack didn't like that he'd gotten mixed up with all of them.

Too late now. He began double-checking his guns to make sure they wouldn't stick.

He didn't fancy being torn apart by a werewolf because his gun jammed. "They don't attack from behind," he said softly.

"Yep, read the reports twice," Peter said, a grin spread across his cheeks as he crossed his arms over his chest, his long black coat catching the wind as he glanced over at Jack. "You all right, man?"

"Just out of practice," he relied, kneeling to touch the roof tiles. He found himself feeling things far more often these days, trying to memorize his surroundings.

So when he went into the blackness, he had an image in his mind to return to.

"Steeling myself for that whole agonizing pain bit," he joked.

"You can't die, right? So there's a bit of pain. We'll be all right." Peter put his hand to Jack's shoulder and nodded. "Promise."

He smiled weakly at him, a shadow of his normally brilliant smile. He had died so many times in the last four years that he'd ceased to feel.

Sometimes he wished he'd just stop feeling altogether. "I can die," he clarified. "I just don't stay dead."
